Martha McKoy Obituary

Ms. Martha McKoy, 88, of Fayetteville, NC., passed away, Sunday, March 3, 2024

     Martha Jane McKinnon McKoy was born on September 7, 1935, in Saint Paul's, NC to the late Walter Lee McKinnon and Amanda Essie Campbell.  On the evening of March 3, 2024, Martha departed this life.  God saw she was tired and weak, so he called her home to rest. 

     Martha was educated in Cumberland County Public Schools.  She had to drop out of school to raise her children but returned later to receive her High School Diploma.  After working several jobs she decided to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a schoolteacher. Attended Fayetteville Technical Community College, Fayetteville State University and Methodist University. She was an educator in the Cumberland County Schools from 1979 thru 1999.  In May 2004 she graduated from Shaw University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at the age of 69.  

     Martha confessed Christ at an early age and joined Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.  Over the years she has been an active member in the church ministries, her favorite being the SIG Mass Choir.   

     She has served in various leadership positions with the United Order of Tents.  Leader of Wade & Martha’s Jewels Tent #749, which was organized by herself and her mentor Sister Ancy Wade in 1980, President of Fayetteville District Leaders Council, Secretary of Fayetteville Area UOT and Royal Degree Circle #150 Financial Secretary. She loved attending the District Grand Conventions and National Grand Encampments.   

     Martha was the matriarch of her family, organizing annual McKinnon Family Reunions until her health began to decline.  She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them every year on Labor Day weekend. 

Martha’s memory will forever be cherished by her children, Gloria B Locklear, Matthew Bernard, Barbara McAllister (James), Julia Bernard, Nancy Bernard, Jerry Bernard (Shelia), Ronald Bernard (Felecita), Edward McKoy, Beverly Gordon and her baby Vincent McKoy (Malecia), her brother, Cleo, sister- in- law, Naomi, 28 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Bernard, brothers, James, Devon and Cicero, sisters Lucy and Jessie.
