Joseph Castro Dones

Southern Pines, NC – Joseph Castro Dones, 66, took his last breath at FirstHealth Hospice Care in Moore County, on August 8, 2019.  He was born March 24, 1953 in Hudson County, New Jersey, the son of Jose Castro Mendez and Juana Gloria Dones Morales.

He served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, prided himself as an inventor, and infected others with his laughter and keen sense of humor.  Some of his favorite things included Saturday Night Live, all-you-can-eat buffets, meat lovers pizza, Coca Cola, pop tarts, fig newtons, chocolate ice cream, ruffles potato chips and classic rock.  Joe never met a stranger.  He fought cancer this past year and knew these were his last days.  In his owns words he said it was his time to go as he had, “Lived a good life with no regrets.”  He had peace believing this was God’s will.  Even in Joe’s last week he shared his sense of humor with all those at his bedside.

Joseph never married or had children.  He leaves behind his sister Olga Castro, his brother Ivan Castro, nieces, nephews and many friends. 

Joseph’s ashes will be buried back home with his mom and dad in Puerto Rico.   A Catholic Mass followed by a graveside service of remembrance will be held during the last weekend of October; details to be published.
