Catherine “Cathie” Jackson of Horatio, died on May 15, 2024. Daughter of Commander Charles A. Orem, USN retired (deceased) and Gerry W. Orem, of Brunswick ME, and wife of Bruce Y. Jackson (deceased), she was born in Kittery, ME on July 27, 1954. She graduated from St. Agnes School (Class of 1972) in Alexandra, Virginia. She received an Associate of Animal Agricultural Technology from University of Maine, Associate in Agricultural Science and Natural Resources from Central Carolina Technical College, and a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife & Fisheries Biology from Clemson University.
Cathie, ever the horsewoman, was Vice President, Business Manager, and Assistant Trainer for Gosmano, Inc. where she trained and raced thoroughbreds for 18 years. As a steward and clerk of scales, she was deeply committed to the National Steeplechase Association and known for her sense of humor and insightful expertise. Cathie had a special place in her heart for Labrador Retrievers whose joyful presence filled her home and accompanied her on walks through the woods, fields, and swamps she cherished.
As a Sumter Master Gardener, Cathie cultivated beauty in her yard and garden, reflecting her dedication to nature conservation. She was also known for her bountiful kitchen and famous mustard. Above all, Cathie’s greatest joy was her love of God. Cathie was a devoted wife and she often shared with her family about her faith in the Lord, love for animals and nature, and the joys of life. Her home was her sanctuary and a place of love, faith, and laughter.
Cathie is survived by her mother Gerry, sisters, Nancy and Sally, two nephews, two nieces, and their children. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM on June 11, 2024 at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Sumter, SC.
