She attended Rosenwald Elementary School in South bay, later moved and attended school in school in Havana, Florida for 5 years and graduated Lakeshore Junior Senior High School in Belleglade, Florida. Janet accepted Christ at an early age, regularly attending service with her mom and sister.
After high school graduation, Janet attended Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama, with aspirations of bilingual immersion studies and foreign exchange exploration in Spanish. While at Miles College, she met Carl Looney whom she married in 1978; a union to which her daughters Karla and Ashley were born. Thereafter, she began a new life in Detroit, Michigan.
Janet spent her early years flying the friendly skies as a favored Flight Attendant for Delta Airlines, traveling the world with her family and then later retiring from Delta as a reservationist. In 1988, she returned to Florida for a short while only to be displaced by a major hurricane - sending her to begin anew, again, in her beloved Fayetteville, NC.
Once settled in Fayetteville, she returned to work as a teaching assistant and substitute teacher at various Cumberland County Schools. She gained the most tenure at Luther Nick Jeralds Middle School, where she was affectionately known as the “meanest, funniest, old sub ever”. According to the students and staff, “she was a gem to the staff and students, who was strict but cared.” Thanks to her students, she leaves this life trending on Instagram.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughters Dr. Karla Mitchell (Emmet) of Detroit, Michigan and Ashley Looney (Vincent ) of Mohegan Lake, NY, eight grandchildren, Emetria, Ryan, Kyndal, Lauryn, Emmet II, Vincent, Twins Brooklyn and Taylor, her sisters Christine Peete and Cynthia Gillum of Florida, her bonus children Desiree Wolfe, Trané, Andre, Arianna and Avery, and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, family, coworkers and students.
