Patricia Freeman

Patsy Freeman, age 81, of Red Springs, NC, earned her heavenly halo on Friday, September 13, 2024. Patsy was born Patricia Rose, a name bestowed by her beloved Aunt, Gladys Young. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Archie Moore, a Veteran and mill worker, and Laverne Young Moore, a homemaker and businesswoman of Red Springs. Patsy graduated from Red Springs High School in 1961.  She attended Charlotte Memorial School of Nursing. This pursuit was cut short as she returned home to care for her ailing father.

Patsy was an active member of the Red Springs Community. She served as a leader in Brownies/Girl Scouts. Patsy also served as a member of the Red Springs Chamber of Commerce, The Rescue Squad, and the Ladies Auxiliary and also delivered Meals on Wheels. Patsy demonstrated her zest for life with the Red Hat Society. She loved going on trips with The Red Hatters. She enjoyed playing bridge in a local club as well.

Patsy spent 28 years engaged with the children of Peterson Elementary School where she served as a Teacher Assistant. She earned “Teacher Assistant of the Year.” Patsy was a regional officer with the “Teacher Assistant Association,” advocating for better pay and other legislative issues.

Patsy enjoyed her summers in the family home in Holden Beach, NC. Despite not being a swimmer, she enthusiastically loved boat rides, fishing, crabbing, and digging for clams.

Patsy was a lifelong member of Westside Baptist Church. Her faith was unwavering throughout her life and was evident to all who knew her. At Westside, she served in a variety of roles. She served as Church Clerk and Youth Director. As Youth Director, Patsy headed efforts to take the youth to the Holy Land USA.  She supported Lottie Moon Mission work and actively participated in mission work in New York. She was active in the Emmaus Walk and warmly shared her love for Christ with others.

Eventually, Patsy became a patient of DaVita, where she had dialysis 3 days a week. She always demonstrated optimism and courage, even though it was difficult and challenging. She attended dialysis dressed fashionably, showing the best version of herself. Patsy was a warrior against kidney disease. The staff at DaVita nicknamed her the “The Diva of DaVita”.  She was recognized there for her fortitude and strength, which Patsy credited with her family before her, especially her grandmother, Emma Pace Young, who was among the first female business owners in Red Springs.

Patsy’s final years were full of blessings. Of particular joy was serving as honorary grandmother to her special cousin Mary Ann Prevatte’s grandchildren. She loved their visits, going to birthday parties and outings with Vera Bella and Emi, Charlotte, Daphne, Matthew, and William.

She is survived by her daughter Melanie McKellar (Mark) of Kansas City, Missouri, and son, Brian Freeman of Red Springs. The apples of her eyes were her grandchildren: Morgan McKellar of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Matthew McKellar of Kansas City, Missouri.

The family thanks all who visited, called, and have been part of Patsy’s life during these difficult years. We wish to extend a special thanks to her childhood best friend, Linda Falls. She was a support for Patsy and a medical appointment companion.

The family will celebrate the life of Patsy Freeman with a private memorial. Unity Funeral Services of Fayetteville, NC is providing service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the National Kidney Foundation to promote dialysis awareness and organ donation.
