Willie “Billy” Williams, 81, of Rockingham, NC entered into eternal rest on September 14, 2023.
He was born on October 14, 1941, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the late Bertha Wall
Ingram and Willie Williams.
After graduating with honors from Leak Street High School in 1959, Willie embarked on an
academic journey that would shape his life's work. His passion for education led him to Winston-
Salem State University, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, laying
the foundation for his lifelong dedication to the field.
Willie’s illustrious career in education began as an instructor at Lancaster County Schools in
Virginia. His commitment to nurturing young minds was unwavering. Later, he relocated to
Richmond, Virginia, where he continued to shape his future by teaching at both the Elementary
and Middle school levels for twenty years at Richmond Public Schools. Before retiring in 2002,
he spent another ten years in several leadership and instructional roles for Minneapolis Public
Schools in Minnesota. In addition to his teaching career, Willie achieved multiple postgraduate
degrees, including a Master of Education from Virginia State University, an Education Specialist
degree from the University of Virginia, and a Doctor of Education from the University of
Minnesota; further demonstrating his dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and his commitment
to excellence in education.
In his leisure time, Willie discovered joy in various pursuits, including traveling, fishing, music,
and cultivating meaningful relationships with family and friends. Even in his golden years, he
remained a vibrant and indispensable member of his community. His generosity radiated as he
dedicated himself to teaching at both Richmond County Community College and Richmond
Correctional Institution. He also served as a magistrate, contributing to the fair and just
administration of the law in his area. Billy’s dedication to his community extended further as he
assumed the role of Director at the Piney Grove Community Center and President of the Leak
Street Alumni Association, where he was instrumental in fostering unity and driving positive
change within his community.
Willie was preceded in death by his daughter, Cherita Atkinson; parents, Bertha and Willie; and
siblings, Pauline Jebara, Charles Ingram and Leon Ingram. He leaves to cherish his memory,
daughter, Nikita Atkinson (Richmond, VA); granddaughter, Dehja Atkinson (Raleigh, NC);
devoted cousins, Dwayne Wall (Rockingham, NC), Howard Wall (Rockingham, NC), Claudia
Wall (Rockingham, NC), Phyllis Wall (Rockingham, NC), Gerrell (Denise) Wall (Monroe, NC),
and Bryon (Josefa) Wall (Chesterfield, VA); Warner Shelton (Rockingham, NC), devoted friend,
Denise (Henry) Atkinson Gary, and a host of other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association in Wilie’s memory.
